The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was among the first American Christian missionary organizations. It was created in 1810 by recent graduates of Williams College. Worcester worked as a missionary for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions from 1825 to 1859, serving the Cherokee Nation at Brainerd Mission, Tennessee; New Echota, Georgia; and in Indian Territory [Oklahoma]. During the state of Georgia's attempt to remove the Cherokee, Worcester refused to cooperate fully and was imprisoned from 1831 to 1833.
